History

The George M. Hampton Foundation was founded on the idea of helping those in need. The Foundation was conceived as a nonprofit tax-exempt affiliate of the Pi Lambda Lambda Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity and incorporated in the State of Virginia on April 19, 2005. We were granted an IRS 501 (c)3 status as a Public Charity on February 16, 2007. Our Foundation is named in honor of Dr. George M. Hampton for his steadfast dedication to providing scholarships to local youth and his commitment to social action that enhances the quality of life in Prince William County. Dr. George M. Hampton is a decorated Army Veteran having served as a Lieutenant Colonel during the Korean War, and later became a PhD, research scientist and professor at several universities. Originally a native of New Jersey, George Hampton grew up in North Carolina, where he graduated from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the United States Army in 1951. As an educator, government appointee and philanthropist, Dr. Hampton served Prince William County for over 50 years.

Since our inception, the Foundation contributed thousands of dollars to local youth scholarships and other youth support programs such as mentoring, essay contests, high school talent hunt programs, school supply drives, etc. We also devote considerable funds annually to community service activities including health fairs, blood drives, Diabetes and Cancer health initiatives, food and clothing drives, and more. Although the Foundation has a broad public focus, its primary mission is to promote and support the scholastic challenges of our youth and the educational underpinnings necessary for successful achievement in tomorrow’s society.

Over the last two years (FY 20 – 21), the George M. Hampton Foundation provided grants and donations totaling over $90,000 to organizations and individuals in Prince William County and surrounding areas. GMHF awarded $47,000 in Scholarships and Essay Contest Prizes to local graduating high school seniors; donated $12,000 to the Hampton Middle School; funded more than $16,000 to support the Omega U Youth Academy programs; and awarded $5,350 in Talent Hunt prizes to high school students competing in the Omega Talent Hunt program. Additionally, GMHF provided grants and donations totaling $10,350 to a number of community and national charitable organizations that include the National Coalition of 100 Black Women (Prince William County Chapter), the Action in Community Through Service (ACTS) organization, the Opportunities, Alternatives & Resources (OAR) organization, the American Diabetes Association (ADA), the Prince William County Community Foundation, and St. Jude Children’s Hospital. The work of the Foundation is often done in partnership with Pi Lambda Lambda Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.
